KAMIEN POMORSKI, POLAND

The Centre for Maritime Archaeology at the National Museum of Denmark.
Submitted by George Indruszewski.
Examined by Niels Bonde, Aoife Daly, Orla Hylleberg Eriksen and Tomasz Wazny.
NNU j.nr. A8084

Shipwreck
The wreck was excavated in 1984. It was found near the town of Kamien Pomorski, in a wetland area adjacent to the shore of Carpinska cove. It is today housed in the National Museum in Szczecin/Stettin.

11 samples of Quercus sp., oak were examined. One of the samples had sapwood preserved. All the samples are dated.

The report describes nine samples from this analysis (samples whose numbers begin with 0093) and two which were analysed some time ago (Filipowiak 1996) (numbers beginning with 06943).

The analysis shows that five samples (0093001A, 0093002A, 0093003A, 0093008A and 00930099, see table 1) probably come from the same tree and the curves are averaged to one (00931019) which represents the tree.

The curves from all 11 samples which represents seven trees, are averaged to form the mean curve 0093M001 of 159 years, which covers the period AD 979-1137. Allowing for missing sapwood, in that the normal sapwood width for Polish trees is circa 15 years, the felling date for the trees from which the samples come, is estimated at circa AD 1142. This date can be taken as the date for the building of the ship.

Dendroprovenance ?
In dating the mean curve 0093M001, master chronologies for oak from around the Baltic sea are used (see table 2). The mean curve cross-dates with curves from Poland and Germany. The t-values do not indicate the provenance of the trees from which the samples come.

Sapwood statistic Wazny 1990; 15 years+9/-6
